Benefit /Gain/Profit/ Advantage


NO.1 Benefit

Benefit为最常用词汇,可以指任何种类的利益,包括物质的或其他类别,不论用什么方式获得。

英文释义:

The advantage or privilege something gives; profit or gain.

例如:

benefit certificate  受益证书

economic benefit 经济效益

mutual benefit       互惠互利

collateral benefit   附带利益

fringe benefit    额外利益


NO.2 Gain

Gain有时可指在无任何人受损的情况下获得或得到某种无形财产,但其更常用作指获得物质上的利益。

英文释义:

An increase in amount, degree, or value; excess of receipts over expenditures or of sale price over cost; the excess of the amount realized form a sale or other disposition of property over the property's adjusted value.

例如:

The company didn't disclose how much it expects to gain  from  the two deals.

He has no aspiration for fame or gain.


NO.3 Profit

Profit更常用作指投资、企业或交易所获得的物质或金钱上的利益或收获。

英文释义:

The excess of revenues over expenditures in a business tra-nsaction.

例如:

The company made a healthy profit on the deal.

The sale generated record profits .


NO. 4 Advantage

Advantage指因某方面占优势或利用某机会以及对方弱点而获得利益与好处。

英文释义:

An advantage is a way in which one thing is better than another.

例如:

an unfair advantage不公平的有利因素(指有利于自己、但并不有利于对手)

Eventually, the new regulations will work to our advantage.

Charge/Accuse/Impeach/Incriminate


NO.1 Charge

Charge一般指向法院提起的正式指控,此外它还可表示谴责某人违背某些行为准则等。

To accuse (a person) of an offense <the police charged him with murder>; To instruct or command <the dean charged the students to act ethically>.

例如:

He may still face criminal charges.

They have the evidence to charge him.

After being questioned by the police, she was released without  charge.



NO.2 Accuse

Accuse指刑事指控,为通用词,可表示正式或非正式,官方或个人指控。

英文释义:

To charge (a person) judicially or publicly with an offense; to make an accusation against <she accused him of the crime><he was accused as an accused as an accomplice>.

例如:

to accuse sb. of murder  指控某人犯谋杀罪

Her assistant was accused of theft and fraud by the police.

The accused men have been given relatively light sentences.


NO.3 Impeach

Impeach为“弹劾”,多指因公共官员犯了叛逆罪或其他严重罪行而对其提起的指控;在英国,此种指控多由下议院提起,由上议院审理。

英文释义:

To charge with a crime or misconduct; esp., to formally cha-rge (a public official) with a violation of the public trust.

例如:

During that meeting, the opposition party put forward a  proposal to impeach the President.

We must impeach the judge for taking bribes.

The angry congressman wanted to impeach the President.


NO.4 Incriminate

Incriminate用于刑事犯罪,可指直接控告罪犯,也可指某人因不利证词而受到牵连,而后一种用法更加常见。

英文释义:

To charge (someone) with a crime; To identify (oneself or another) as being involved in the commission of a crime or other wrongdoing.

——Black's Law Dictionary

例如:

He claimed that the drugs had been planted to incriminate him.

I did not incriminate my client.

They are afraid of incriminating themselves and say no mo-re than is necessary.
