The Road Not Taken

Robert Frost

Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,

And sorry I could not travel both.

And be one traveller, long I stood

And looked down one as far as I could

To where it bent in the undergrowth;

Then took the other, as just as fair,

And having perhaps the better claim,

Because it was grassy and wanted wear;

Though as for that passing there

Had worn them really about the same.

And both that morning equally lay

In leaves no step had trodden back.

Oh, I kept the first for another day!

Yet knowing how way leads on to way,

I doubted if I should ever come back.

I shall be telling this with a sigh

Somewhere ages and ages hence:

Two roads diverged in a wood, and I ---

I took the one less travelled by,

And that has made all the difference.

因为它草多,缺少人踩;

"The road not chosen" is a philosophical lyric poem, which is plain on the surface, but actually contains profound philosophy; It may seem like telling personal experience, but actually it expresses people's common feelings. In this poem, frost grasps the specific image of the forked road in the forest, and USES metaphor to arouse people's rich and vivid association, so as to highlight the philosophical symbolism of the forked road in life. The poet chooses the forest-fork road, which is quite common among people, to illustrate the philosophy of how to choose one's life path.

Apparently, the first version of translation is more beautiful. It is also the most popular version in books of all around. In the first translation, the translator used the simple and natural language and rhythm to express his thinking about life. This unadorned style makes this poem as soft as the wind in summer night, full of fresh and natural taste, giving the readers a refreshing feeling.
