《丑奴儿》

辛弃疾

少年不识愁滋味，

爱上层楼。

爱上层楼，

为辅新词强说愁。

而今识尽愁滋味，

欲说还休。

In each paragraph of this poem, there are seven words in the first and the fourth line, and the second or third line are reiterative sentence of four words, which is of beutiful rhyme and significant meaning. Weng Xianliang translated it into prose, but at the same time he used the rhythm of poetry, and words are also arranged in accordance with the rhythm of poetry. When you read it, it seemed like neither like poetry, nor prose. It is difficult to convey the style of Xin Qiji. In Lin Yutang's translation, the first and the fourth line are long, and the second and the fourth line are short. The long lines stress the rhyme, short lines are reiterative sentences, which is more close to the original word style. Thus, when the content and form of the original text are unified, the more faithful the translation is to the form of the original text, the more it can convey the style of the original text. In addition, Lin Yutang used plain characters. In the first paragraph, the "愁滋味"was translated with the method of the counter-translation. In the second paragraph, the "愁滋味"was translated with the method of division: both bitter and sour.
