Over the Fence

Over the fence—

Strawberries—grow—

Strictly speaking, the dash in Dickinson's poem is only equivalent to a kind of pause sign, which is not equivalent to the dash in the general sense that we are familiar with. In this poem, Jiang reduces the use of dashes and used short commas to indicate pauses, especially the last sentence “他也会爬过去，如果，他能爬过！”, replacing the dashes with commas to describe god could not stand the sweet strawberries and he could not wait to climb the fence. Jiang’s words are simple but reflects the active character of the poet. For example, “Strawberries—grow— ” is translated as “有草莓一颗”,which let readers can’t help but salivate at the vivid image.“If He were a boy” is translated as “如果他也是个孩子” , the extra word“也”makes people realize that the poet who had always been isolated from the world also has a childlike heart, as well as naughty and lively innocence. Pu retains the dashes of the original text, reflecting the "faithfulness", and more in line with people's thinking pattern of poetry. From the perspective of the whole poem, Jiang's translation does not copy the original poem, and even has omissions. However, the style of the translation is similar to the original poem, and the vivid image appears on the paper, which makes people crack up. Pu's translation is the representation of the original text. The form is similar to the original poem, but the translation lacks the pure beauty of children's world.
