很多中国法律的英译本确实都是这么翻译的。如在《中华人民共和国会计法》的英译本中：

第三条  各单位必须依法设置会计账簿，并保证其真实、完整。

Article 3 Every unit must set up account books in accordance with law and ensure that they are authentic and complete.

但其实这一译法并不地道。

英语单次unit的确有等同于中文的“单位”这个字眼，但这个释义是指较大一个事物的组成部分或计量用的单位，并无我们供职的作为一个整体的独立的企事业单位这一释义。

以英语为母语的人平时说话和写作中遇到要解释相当于中国话里的“单位”时，一般使用organization。英语单词organization涵盖范围很广，凡是为某一目的而组成的集团均可被指代。

如：

例1：The Pinkerton National Detective Agency was the first nationwide investigative organization (The Reader’s Companion to American History, 1991)

例2：Accounting bases The methods used for applying fundamental accounting concepts to financial transactions and items when preparing financial statements. The particular bases adopted by an organization will form its accounting policies. 

例3：Rule 406 Evidence of the habit of a person or of the routine practice of an organization, whether corroborated or not and regardless of the presence of eyewitnesses, is relevant to prove that the conduct of the person or organization on a particular occasion was in conformity with the habit or routine practice.

在部分中国法律的英译本中，也是可以找到organizations这一译法的：

《中华人民共和国宪法》第五条第四款

“任何组织或者个人都不得有超越宪法和法律的特权”

“No organization or individual may enjoy the privilege of being above the Constitution and the law.”

此外，在非法律语体的场合中，能表示“单位”的词语除了organization之外还有institution和establishment，同时还可以使用具体的词语，如company、corporation、firm、factory、school等来表达所在单位。如果需要指一个单位的某个部门，那么视具体情况可以使用department、division、unit等来表达。

我们可以在一般的使用英语的场合，根据应用词义的上下义关系，变换词语来避免重复。但是，中国立法文件里出现“单位”一词，其英译文一般应为organization，而且必须一用到底，因为法律文件的翻译要遵循译名同一律的要求，法律文件不怕重复使用同一个字。
